Linus the Minus Day:
Linus the Minus Day
Date : 27th of January 2022
Venue: Online Class
Class: Pre-First (Group sessions)
The day began with a story of ‘Ten Red Apples’ where one by one animals came and ate all the apples. The students understood how the apples became less when ‘Linus the minus’ was around. A video was shown on Linus the Minus who took things away and made the object/number become less. The minus sign is depicted as a sleeping line.
Activity
The students had been instructed to be ready with objects like crayons, beads, colour pencils, play dough balls, ice-cream sticks etc. (at least 10 in number).
Each child in the group had to solve the sums simultaneously and one child had to answer aloud. The teacher showed a number card and the children had to remove that many objects. Then the teacher showed another number card and asked them to become like Linus the Minus and take away that many objects. And one child said the answer aloud.
A follow-up presentation of the Idarah worksheet was done online and students were made to solve the sums.
Students enjoyed the activity and understood the subtraction concept well.
